Cantilever House

Cantilever House

Vermont

About

A lakeside summer cottage in central Vermont.

Avoiding a single, dominant structure, the building program is separated into two volumes: a one-car garage with studio above, and a three-bedroom main house.

In addition to being placed at different locations along the entry path, both volumes cantilever above the pathway to frame and choreograph the path and views. Maximizing the large elevational drop along the length of the site, the studio, master suite, and living spaces all have distinct elevational vantage points for unimpeded lakefront views. The simple offset forms, along with a minimal material palette, create a subtle presence that situates the project into the existing closely spaced lakefront community.
