Vermont
Terrapin
A single-family home designed for a large family. Includes a garage, mudroom, laundry, office, exercise room, and outdoor living areas—all set into a dramatic ridgeline between forest and meadow.
Positioned on a Vermont ridgeline between two ecosystems, Terrapin was built to hover over the land and capture expansive views while becoming one with its natural environment.
The home was elevated on concrete pillars, lifting it above the ground and creating a sense of lightness. The massing was stacked to echo the layers of rock in the ridgeline. Black-stained, knotty cedar was chosen as the singular exterior material to allow the home to visually recede into the landscape. Materials from the exterior carry through the interior uninterrupted, blurring the boundary between inside and out. Vertical planes of glass intersect wood ceilings, and walls transition seamlessly between environments. Terrapin was built to offer an immersive living experience and fade into its surrounding ecology.
